Hill Country Master Gardeners (HCMG) were approached by the Manager of the Hill Country Youth Event Center (HCYEC) located at 3785 TX-25 in Kerrville TX, to help with the aesthetics to the front of the building. There are trees already planted on the grounds, surrounded by limestone blocks that were removed and preserved from the previously torn down Kerr County Courthouse.

HCMG presented a plan for approval for a beautiful, professional-looking landscape that included plants that are native or adapted to the Hill Country, low maintenance, low water volume, deer ‘resistant’ as well as pleasing to the eye for the thousands of event attendees of the HCYEC on a weekly basis. The landscape plan was unanimously approved by the Kerr County Extension Agent, Mike Morris, and the Kerr County Commissioners’ Court in September/October 2024.

To add color and contrast, part of the landscape includes a bird habitat, in conjunction with our partnership with Kerrville Bird City. The 245 square-foot portion directly under the windows at the HCYEC act as a sanctuary for birds and pollinators alike.

The project commenced in October 2024 thanks to HCMG’s and will serve as an educational showcase to the public, just across the parking lot from the Demonstration Garden.
